Camera RAW vs JPEG

Updated: May 28

Applying filters can be fun but it is limited to Instagram or Snap chat.

My clients ask for RAW photos and according to my experience they ask for RAWs because of these reasons.

1. They don't know technical difference between RAWs and JPEGs for them a photo is just a photo.

2. Editing is not hard work. Its all about applying filters.

3. They have copyright on all RAW files.

4. They are better in photo editing.

5. Someone from their families or friend circle is also a photographer so they will get editing for free.

6. RAW is real HD image

Here I will explain all these misunderstandings one by one:

So start from start.

1. Technical Difference between RAWs and JPEGs.

A RAW photo is like a newspaper before it gets prints. It has all data news, headings, images , fonts on printing plate and an editor can can edit those individually before print final newspaper while a JPEG is a printed newspaper which can be read only and final product by news agency to read it. May be you could do a better editing but you have no authority for it even your photo has been published in it.

Same thing for RAW photos. In RAW format a photo contains all details about editing terms like color temperature, tint shades, exposure, contrast, saturation, shadows, highlights, texture, lens profiles, distortion, tones etc which makes easy to edit photo later without loosing details in terms of merging pixels. When I complete editing a photo then I need to export it from editing software here I can choose to export it in RAW form which is known as .DNG also or I can export it in JPEG.

If I choose DNG then system will export it in RAW form with again all editing details in changeable form without loosing details.

If I choose JPEG form than system will save only photo and all other details will be merge into photo and give final result same like from printing plate to final newspaper. Remember one thing it doesn't downgrade quality of photo.

2. Editing is not hard work , its about applying filters.

Once I was a outdoor portfolio photo shoot of a new model and after shoot she ask me to transfer all photos hand to hand. I said all are unedited and mix with failed shots. She said she know editing and she will do herself. I said no words after that and gave her all photos.

After 2 days I received her call and she was shouting on me that I gave her wrong images none of those images not opening in her phone. I just laugh and cut the call.

So Point is her RAW photos are not usable if you don't know ABC of editing. Android or iPhone apps which edit photos by applying filters can do nothing with Camera Raw files.

Applying filters can be fun but it is limited to Instagram or Snapchat.

3.They have copyright on all RAW files.

A Photographer has ultimate copyright of her/his photograph taken by her/him until she/he don't sold photographs or release those for public domain for free use.

Here are some noticeable points for photographers also like

If you took someone's personal place photo without permission.

Taking photographs of commercial or copyrighted logos or art work or trade marks etc.

These types photography is not fully copyrighted by photographers and have some separate rules for this.

4. . They are better in photo editing.

Why not but let the photographer finish her/his work and if you demand photos for self editing than later you have no rights to asking photographers for free editing.

5. Someone from their families or friend circle is also a photographer so they will get editing for free.

Hire them no issues but I took photos so I have credit on it.

6. RAW is real HD image

I can laugh on this all day. Camera RAW files take more space because it contains some extra data in form of image format details not because of it has more pixels. Article by Bharat Kumar www.instagram.com/bharatspace
